About Maudies Cottage

That's me.

In 2000 my husband’s work took us to a little town in the northern interior of British Columbia called Mackenzie. Since I am by profession a Computer Programmer/Analyst, there was not a whole lot for me to do there, but the small town (pop 5000 or so souls) did boast a quilt shop.

Now I had been a sewer most of my life, as well as trying my hand at knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, embroidery, but had never tried to quilt. It just seemed too fussy and old fashioned for me. Until I took my first class……

I fell hard. It was love at first seam. I adored the whole thing: the choosing of a pattern, the perfect colour choices to make it sing, the exactness of the piecing and pressing, the perfection of perfectly matched points and seams, and finally, the wondrous threads and patterns of the quilting itself, gently held in check by the smooth curve of bias binding. Gad, I was in heaven.

Then I tried fusible appliqué….. I cannot type those words without drooling.

Maudie’s Cottage is a small pattern studio that came into being out of this love – my absolute love of fabric, quilting, and fusible appliqué, and using these art forms on gifts. It was also out of necessity – I really had to use up some of my fabric stash before I could get any more, and there were no birthdays/babies/anniversaries on the horizon. Therefore, I decided to make samples of some of the patterns in my head so I could use up lots of fabric. Then I’d have room for new stuff.

Maudie’s is named for my grandmother, Elizabeth Ida Maude St. Martin who, I am convinced, passed on her skill for most forms of handwork to the family. My friends and family have been very supportive of this whole pattern idea, for which I will always be grateful  – and you should see what they can do! Without their encouragement, I would never have been brave enough to try this venture.

We have since relocated back to Ontario, where most of my family is. I am also grateful to have Quilt Tester Iona always ready and able to try my ideas, as well as the fabulous quilt testers I met at Life’s A Stitch, my local and favourite quilt shop. Thanks to them I get the thrill of seeing my ideas come to life. I cannot get enough of fabric, thread, and the camaraderie of quilting!
